The Ascott Limited was established in 1998 by Simon Kuek, a Chinese American who had studied in the United Kingdom. Simon and his wife, Amy Chiang, came to live in Singapore after retiring from the British Army. After studying electrical engineering, they decided to open their own restaurant. The name of the restaurant was somewhat inspired by their son’s fascination with all things Japanese-related. The latest development will be Canninghill Piers which is right at the heart of the city.

The history of The Ascott Limited is quite interesting. It was founded by Simon Kuek with his wife Amy. Initially, the idea was to create a Japanese-style bar and restaurant but because of the lack of funds, the couple decided to open a Chinese restaurant instead. The Kuek’s son, Lin, was then hired to manage the restaurant as well as cook and serve. Although Simon Kuek and Lin Kuek are still involved in the management of the business today, Amy Chiang serves as the general manager. Canninghill Piers Condo will be located at River Valley Road.

The history of The Ascott Limited San Diego dates back to when Simon Kuek, now deceased, was living in California. He had met with several Chinese businessmen who expressed interest in purchasing restaurant properties in San Diego. The Kuek family decided to purchase a portion of these properties and open The Ascott Limited on the spots where they purchased. The name of the restaurant was given to the Kueks after their son received his first job at the establishment. Canninghill Piers is the former Liang Court enbloc right at the heart of the city. It is located at Canning Lane.

The Ascott Limited offers traditional Chinese cuisine which incorporates aromatic and spice ingredients. The concept of non-vegetarian meals has been adopted by this chain of restaurants, which is why most of the Chinese dining is in Chinese restaurants. The main dishes consist of large portions of beef, roast chicken, roasted pork, roast beef, stir-fried vegetables, stir-fried fruits and vegetables, noodles, onions and salad.

Although this is a Chinese restaurant, the owner maintains the authenticity of local Chinese culture. The Ascott Limited uses traditional Chinese ingredients and flavors such as ginger, Szechwan peppers, garlic, sauces made from ginger, Szechwan grapes and star anise. The restaurant is located at 4th Avenue and Prospect Street in San Diego’s Gaslamp District. The building was constructed in remembrance of William Temple, who had many successes as a restaurateur in San Diego. He designed the Oriental styled building that now serves as The Ascott Limited.

The restaurant is two stories and the restaurant seating is intimate. The interior design of the restaurant is inspired by the Chinese heritage and influenced by the Japanese-Chinese heritage. The chef Mark Leijenmeister creates each dish with fresh ingredients. He also specializes in using traditional Chinese cooking methods. The restaurant prides itself on the delicious Asian cuisine that is prepared in front of you in a very authentic Chinese style.
